Today Jonathan led the service, while Siobhan preached the first of a collection of character studies for August. She took as her subject Miriam, the older sister of Moses – who watched over him when he was placed by his mother in a basket in the reeds by the Nile, and led the women in rejoicing after the sea through which the Israelites had passed closed in to engulf Pharoah’s pursuing army. Later in the exodus, Miriam was involved in a less glorious episode that invoked a rebuke from God.
